Hyun Higbie


Hyun Higbie is a Korean-American artist. She was born in Gwangju, South Korea in 1956. She immigrated to the United States in 1976 and currently lives and works in Rhode Island. She studied at the University of Wisconsin (BFA, 1980), New York University (MA, 1983) and the Rhode Island School of Design (MFA, 1993).

Watercolor on paper is Hyun’s primary medium of painting. Her works include autobiographical portrayals, her reflections on the life of women in art, particularly Asian women artists in America, and personal moments of vulnerability interwoven with resilience. Shades of Memories is Hyun’s oeuvre of sixty watercolor pieces, spanning more than thirty years of creation, with each painting sharing an intimate event, experience or raw expression. Viewed together, the paintings of Shades of Memories compose a full picture of Hyun’s life.

Hyun Higbie exhibited her works in Korea and the United States including Han Sun Galley (Seoul), Gallery Agbe (Gwangu), David Winton Rell Gallery (Providence), Fuller Museum of Art (Brockton), the Harriet Tubman Gallery (Boston) and the Mario Diacono Gallery (Boston).
